The off-season is where championships are truly won. While most players are waiting for the spring thaw to lace up their cleats, the elite athletes in Ottawa are already refining the technical nuances that separate a “good” receiver from a “dominant” one.
At Capital QBs, we understand that a quarterback is only as effective as the targets they throw to. That is why we are proud to announce the 2027 Capital REC’s Winter Receiver Training Program.
This isn’t a “camps and catches” session. This is a high-level development lab designed to build professional-grade habits in young receivers. Led by Coach Geoff Coventry, this program focuses on the science of route running, the mechanics of the catch, and the tactical intelligence required to beat modern coverages.
The Gap: Misconception vs. Reality
Many young receivers believe that “training” simply means running routes and catching passes from a jugs machine. In reality, the position is far more complex.
-
The Misconception: Being fast is enough to get open.
-
The Reality: Speed is a tool, but leverage and technique are the keys. Without a clean release and a sharp break, even the fastest receiver can be neutralized by a disciplined defensive back.
-
The Misconception: Catching is just about “good hands.”
-
The Reality: Catching is about body positioning, eye discipline, and hand placement. If your eyes aren’t tracking the nose of the ball into the tuck, your “good hands” will eventually fail you under pressure.
-
The Misconception: You can learn timing on your own.
-
The Reality: Timing is a shared language between a QB and a WR. Capital REC’s solves this by integrating our receivers directly with the Capital QBs Quarterback Training Program.
The 4 Pillars of Capital REC’s Training
Our curriculum is built on four fundamental pillars that ensure every athlete leaves the dome a more complete football player.
1. Explosive Releases & The First Two Yards
The battle is often won or lost in the first two yards of the route. Coach Coventry teaches receivers how to defeat press coverage using a variety of releases, diamond releases, speed releases, and heavy-hand techniques.
✓ Goal: To get into the route stem without being rerouted or delayed.
2. Route Running Precision
We focus on the “geometry” of the route. This includes the vertical stem, the sink of the hips at the break point, and the explosive “burst” coming out of the cut.
✓ Goal: To create maximum separation at the top of the route.
3. High-Point Dynamics & Ball Security
A great receiver treats every ball in the air as “theirs.” We train athletes on high-pointing the football, winning contested catches, and the “toe-drag” technique for sideline awareness.
✓ Goal: To increase the “catch radius” and ensure ball security through contact.
4. Tactical IQ (Reading Coverage)
Understanding defensive leverage is what allows a receiver to adjust their route on the fly. We teach players how to identify Cover 2 vs. Cover 3 and how to find the “soft spots” in the zone.
✓ Goal: To turn receivers into secondary “field generals” who understand the structure of the defense.

Meet Your Lead Instructor: Coach Geoff Coventry
To reach the next level, you need to learn from someone who has been there. Coach Geoff Coventry brings a professional pedigree and a championship-winning track record to every session.
Meet Your Receiver Coaching Team
Elite receiver play is built through details, reps, and feedback. That’s why Capital REC’s is supported by a receiver coaching team that can teach the craft and the mindset.
Coach Brandon Weekes (Receiver Coach)
Coach Weekes brings a blend of pro-level experience and proven coaching leadership:
- Professional playing experience: Europe (Oslo) and Ottawa.
- Pro tryout: Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
- Carleton Ravens: Entering his 4th season as Receiver Coach.
- Play-caller experience: Former Offensive Coordinator, Myers Riders.
- Mentorship focus: Developing confident, technically sound receivers who understand why each detail matters.
Antony Kolacek (Receiver Coach)
Coach Kolacek helps athletes develop skills that translate under pressure—when it’s loud, fast, and chaotic:
- McGill University: Recruitment Coach.
- St. Matthew: JV Head Coach / Varsity Receiver Coach (2022 City & OFSAA Champions).
- CJFL Ottawa Sooners: Quality Control Coach.
- Coaching philosophy: Blending kinesiology and psychology so you move with purpose and perform in flow—not forced.
Coach Coventry’s resume speaks for itself:
- Former CFL Professional: A former receiver for the Montreal Alouettes (2014), Geoff understands the speed and discipline required to play at the highest level in Canada.
- Championship Pedigree: As the Head Coach of St. Matthew Catholic High School, he led the team to both the 2023 Ottawa City Championship and the OFSAA Championship.
- Local Legend: An alum of Bishop’s University and St. Peter Catholic High School, Geoff is deeply rooted in the Ottawa football community.
- Media Visionary: Beyond coaching, he is the creator of several media platforms dedicated to highlighting Ontario high school football, giving young players the visibility they need for recruitment.
When you train with Coach Coventry, you aren’t just getting drills, you are getting a blueprint for success from a coach who knows exactly what scouts and recruiters are looking for.
The “Hook-Up” Period: A Unique Advantage
The most significant advantage of the Capital REC’s program is our integrated session format. Most receiver programs exist in a vacuum, where WRs run routes against “air” or coaches.
At the New Garneau Dome, we bridge that gap.
Every session concludes with the “Hook-Up” Period. This is where our receivers pair up with the Capital QBs quarterbacks for live reps.
Why this matters:
- Real Velocity: You learn to catch balls thrown with the velocity and touch of the region’s top-tier QBs.
- Timing & Rhythm: You develop a “feel” for when the ball will be out, allowing you to time your breaks perfectly.
- Chemistry: For players looking to dominate the 2027 season, building this rapport in the winter leads to a massive head start in the fall.

What You Will Master: The Curriculum Checklist
Each session is designed to stack skills on top of one another. Over the course of the 9-week program, receivers will master:
- Explosive Releases: Beating press coverage and maintaining the red line.
- Hand Placement: Using the “diamond” technique and soft hands to secure the catch.
- Yards After Catch (YAC): Securing the ball and immediately transitioning into an explosive runner.
- Body Control: Adjusting to back-shoulder fades and low-thrown balls.
- Sideline Awareness: Perfecting the “toe-tap” and maintaining balance near the boundary.
- Deep Ball Tracking: Maintaining eye contact with the football over the shoulder without breaking stride.
- Physicality: Using the body to shield defenders in traffic.
⚠️ Important Note: These sessions are high-intensity. We expect athletes to arrive prepared to work and ready to absorb professional-level coaching.
The Session Format: Structure for Success
We utilize a deliberate practice model to ensure maximum skill acquisition in a 60-minute window.
- Joint Warm-Up: A dynamic, football-specific warm-up alongside the QBs. This focuses on mobility, footwork, and neurological activation.
- Receiver-Only Breakout: Athletes head to a dedicated area with Coach Geoff to work on the “Theme of the Day”, whether it’s releases, slant-stemming, or high-pointing.
- The Hook-Up Period: The final 20-30 minutes are dedicated to live routes with the quarterbacks. This is where the technical work meets game-speed reality.

Why Choose Capital REC’s?
The Ottawa football landscape is competitive. To stand out to coaches and scouts, you cannot rely on talent alone. You need a technical foundation that holds up when the game is on the line.
✓ Position-Specific Expertise: You are being coached by a former pro receiver, not a generalist.
✓ Live Reps: The integration with Capital QBs is a game-changer for your development.
✓ Championship Culture: Surround yourself with athletes who are just as committed to excellence as you are.
The goal of this program is simple: To ensure that when the 2027 season kicks off, you are the most prepared, most technical, and most confident receiver on the field.

The Bottom Line
“You play the way you train.”
If you spend your winter on the couch, you will spend your autumn catching up. If you spend your winter in the dome with Coach Geoff Coventry, you will spend your autumn in the end zone.
Don’t just be a target. Be a weapon. We look forward to seeing you at the New Garneau Dome this January.
