🏈 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL OR CITY FOOTBALL?

Ask the Right Questions Before You Decide

Choosing where to play football is a bigger decision than most young athletes realize.

A lot of players naturally want to play where their friends are. That matters. Football should be fun, and being around people you enjoy can make the experience better.

But if you’re serious about improving, preparing for the next level, or simply getting the most out of your season, you should look beyond where your friends are playing.

The real question is:

Which environment is best for my development, enjoyment, and future?

Before making your decision, ask yourself these questions.

1. COACHING

  • Will I receive quality coaching at my position?
  • Will coaches actually teach technique and football IQ?
  • Will they explain mistakes and help me improve?
  • Are practices organized with a purpose?
  • Will I get meaningful feedback?

Good coaching is more than calling plays.

It’s teaching footwork, leverage, hand placement, route running, tackling, reads, assignments, and decision-making.

2. PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Ask yourself one simple question:

Will I be a noticeably better player at the end of the season?

  • Will I get quality repetitions?
  • Will I be challenged?
  • Will my weaknesses be corrected?
  • Will I learn a real football system?
  • Will I improve mentally as well as physically?

There’s a difference between playing football and learning football.

3. COMPETITION

Good competition makes players better.

  • Will I face strong opponents?
  • Will practices be competitive?
  • Will I have to earn my position?
  • Will opponents expose weaknesses I need to fix?
  • Will the level of play prepare me for what comes next?

Being uncomfortable sometimes is part of getting better.

4. FILM & FOOTBALL IQ

Film becomes more important the higher you go.

  • Are games consistently filmed?
  • Will I be able to study my own performance?
  • Will coaches help me understand what I see on film?
  • Will I learn formations, fronts, coverages and tendencies?
  • Will I have usable game film if I want to play at a higher level?

A smarter player usually plays faster.

5. CULTURE

This may be one of the most important factors.

Football should be demanding, but players should not dread showing up.

  • Are players treated with respect?
  • Do coaches care about the people they coach?
  • Can coaches demand more without humiliating players?
  • Are mistakes used as teaching opportunities?
  • Do teammates support one another?
  • Is there accountability without constant negativity?
  • Do players enjoy being part of the program?

A strong football culture should include:

Respect. Accountability. Brotherhood. Energy. Fun.

You can work hard and still love football.

6. GAME-DAY & FAMILY EXPERIENCE

The experience off the field matters too.

  • Can my family regularly attend my games?
  • Are games played at reasonable times?
  • Does the league provide a competitive game-day atmosphere?
  • Are road games and playoffs meaningful?
  • Will my family feel involved in the season?

Parents invest a lot of time into a player’s football journey. Their ability to watch and support matters.

7. PREPARING FOR THE NEXT LEVEL

If your goal is CEGEP, CJFL, university football or beyond, ask:

  • Am I learning a larger playbook?
  • Am I developing position-specific skills?
  • Am I learning to study film?
  • Am I competing against strong players?
  • Am I learning accountability?
  • Am I being prepared for greater speed, physicality and responsibility?

The higher the level, the higher the expectations.

THE HARDEST QUESTION

Ask yourself why you’re choosing where to play.

Is it because my friends are there?

Or:

Is it because this is the best environment for me?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to play with friends.

But your friends cannot improve your footwork.

They cannot teach you coverage recognition.

They cannot build your football IQ.

They cannot earn your starting job.

And they cannot make decisions about your future for you.

At some point, every athlete has to take ownership of their own development.

THE FINAL CHECKLIST

Before you commit anywhere, ask:

  • Where will I receive the best coaching?
  • Where will I improve the most?
  • Where will I face the best competition?
  • Where will I learn the most football?
  • Where will I get quality film?
  • Where will I be treated with respect?
  • Where will I enjoy going to practice?
  • Where will my family be able to watch my games?
  • Where will I be best prepared for the next level?
  • Where will I become the best version of myself as a football player?

Then make the decision that is right for you.

Not because it’s the easiest choice.

Not because everyone else is doing it.

Not because somebody pressured you into it.

Choose the environment where you can develop, compete, enjoy football, and grow.
